Nguyen Duy Niem (born in 1968, residing in Dong Son 5 hamlet, Luong Son commune, Nghe An province) has just been temporarily detained and probed by Nghe An police on charges of „making, storing, disseminating or propagating information, documents, and items aimed at opposing the Socialist Republic of Vietnam“ per Article 117 of the Criminal Code.
On October 6 and October 7, two Gia Lai residents, Vo Thi Phung and Nguyen Van Tong, were arrested under Article 331 of the Criminal Code for protesting against the policy of indiscriminate land acquisition for industrial parks.
On October 7, Dak Lak police arrested writer and former political prisoner Huynh Ngoc Tuan on charges of “conducting anti-state propaganda” under Article 117.
On October 8, Dak Lak police continued to arrest another religious activist, Y Nuen Ayŭn (born 1967), on charges of “undermining the unity policy” under Article 116 of the Criminal Code. The state-controlled media described him as “chief of the Executive Committee of the reactionary organization the Evangelical Church of Christ in the Central Highlands” – a phrase often used in campaigns to slander independent religious groups in Vietnam.
Thus, within just four days, the authoritarian regime in Vietnam arrested five people just because they legally exercised their rights to freedom of expression and freedom of religion.
It seems that under leadership of former police general To Lam, the regime imposes fierce suppression against local dissidents and activists.
