After Mr. N. H. Long, a Vietnamese citizen convicted in Berlin for participating in the kidnapping of Mr. Trinh Xuan Thanh, the Czech authorities on June 1, 2022, arrested and extradited another Vietnamese man to Germany on allegation of participating in this kidnapping.
It was a long-planned action: On July 23, 2017, a group of commandos from the Vietnamese secret service and embassy staff kidnapped a couple on a street in Berlin. The victim was Trinh Xuan Thanh and his lover, Do Thi Minh Phuong, a Vietnamese citizen.
Now the legal process of kidnapping has gone a step further: the Czech Republic has extradited one of the perpetrators to Germany, as announced by the federal prosecutor. There are many doubts that Anh T.L. is a Vietnamese secret service agent who participated in the kidnapping and deprived others of freedom.
Specifically, Mr. T.L. allegedly scouted the victims and drove one of the cars used in the kidnapping. According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, the man was brought before the investigative judge of the Federal Court of Justice on Wednesday, June 1, 2022. He was detained before trial.
It is known that, upon entering the Czech Republic, Mr. Anh T.L. was arrested at the border in accordance with a European wanted order issued in 2019.
Earlier, in early 2018, another Vietnamese named N. H. Long was sentenced to many years in prison by the Berlin Court of Appeal for participating in the kidnapping. The German federal government strongly condemned the action at the time. The Foreign Office has spoken out about a flagrant and unprecedented violation of German and international law.
The kidnapping victim, Mr. Trinh Xuan Thanh, was brought back to Hanoi and sentenced to life in prison twice.
