Vietnamese Prime Minister pays tribute to martyrs during a Chinese invasion in 1979

On January 26, in Quang Ninh province, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh commemorated the country’s martyrs who died in fighting against China’s aggression in February 1979.

The Government Electronic Newspaper, the official portal of the Vietnamese government, said that the PM offered incense at the Po Hen Heroic Martyrs Memorial, in Mong Cai city, Quang Ninh province.

In a dignified atmosphere, PM Chinh and the Central Committee’s delegation respectfully offered incense and laid wreaths in memory of heroes and martyrs who died in the war to protect the border for the cause of the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam,” the Vietnamese government’s newspaper wrote.

It was reported that on February 17, 1979, “cadres and soldiers of Border Guard Station 209, now Po Hen Border Guard Station, Quang Ninh Border Guard, and Hai Son Forest Enterprise staff, Mong Cai commercial staff tenaciously fought to protect every inch of the sacred land of the Fatherland” but the report did not specifically mention China.

For many years until Vietnam and China normalized their relations in November 1991, Vietnamese books and mainstream newspapers still used the phrase “war against the Chinese invaders” to talk about the war that broke out on February 17, 1979, when China sent tens of thousands of troops to attack six northernmost border provinces of Vietnam.

PM Chinh and his delegation expressed their “unlimited respect and gratitude” at the martyrs’ memorial in Po Hen, as reported by the Government Electronic Newspaper, and expressed their determination to “perform their duties well to firmly protecting territorial sovereignty, security of national borders, building borders of peace, friendship, stability, cooperation, and mutual development.”

Before the memorial activity in Po Hen, the PM’s delegation visited, wished Tet, and gave gifts to functional forces working at Mong Cai international border gate, still reported by the Vietnamese government’s portal.

The PM emphasized that the border guards, police, customs, quarantine, border management boards, and other units “must contribute to maintaining the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country by peaceful means.

Chinh also advised on the need to “close and effective cooperation” between Vietnamese agencies and Chinese agencies in the spirit of “emotion, sincerity, trust, respect and equality, cooperation, efficiency, mutual benefits, respect for each other’s legitimate rights and interests, building a border of peace, friendship, cooperation, and development.”

Not long ago, another senior Vietnamese leader also paid tribute to martyrs in the war against China in a border province.

On December 8, 2021, President Nguyen Xuan Phuc offered incense at Vi Xuyen Martyrs Cemetery in Ha Giang province.

The domestic press said that President Phuc and his delegation had “silently remembered the heroic spirit” of more than 1,700 heroes and martyrs resting at the cemetery. They are people from 32 provinces and cities of Vietnam who have fallen “in the war to defend the northern border,” according to the language reported in the state-controlled press.
